This indenture made between Thomas M. Tate, executor of the last will and testament of General William Tate, late of the County of Washington and State of Virginia, deceased; Nancy Tate, widow of the said William Tate; Leonidas Tate, Charles Tate and John Tate, devisees of the said William Tate, all of the County of Washington and State of Virginia, of the one part and John, a slave of the said William Tate of the other part. Witnesseth that whereas a certain Doct. Mitchell Tate, a son of the said William Tate on the 23rd day of February 1827 entered into an agreement in writing by which the said General William Tate bound himself upon the receipt of the sum of four hundred dollars from the said Mitchell Tate to emancipate and set at liberty the said slave John; the said Mitchell Tate being moved to procure the emancipation of the said slave John in consideration of his great attention to him in sickness under which he labored for a considerable time, and whereas the said Mitchell Tate afterwards departed this life having duly published his last will and testament, and appointed Thomas Tate his executor, who qualified and took upon himself the burden of the execution thereof, by which last will and testament the said Mitchell Tate directed his said executor to pay to the said General William Tate the sum of our hundred dollars aforesaid, and thereby procure the emancipation of the said slave John. And the said General William Tate afterwards departed this life having first duly made and published his last will and testament and appointed his grandson, the said Thomas M. Tate, his sole executor who qualified and took upon himself the burden of the execution thereof, since which time the said Thomas Tate, executor of the said Doct. Mitchell Tate has paid to the said Thomas M. Tate, executor of the said General William Tate and the said Doct. Mitchell Tate, and pursuant to directions of the last will and testament of the said Doct. Mitchell Tate, the receipt whereof the said Thomas M. Tate executor of the said William Tate, doth hereby acknowledge, in consideration whereof, and in consideration of the whole premises the said Thomas M. Tate, executor as aforesaid of the said General William Tate; Nancy C. Tate, widow of the said General William Tate; and Leonida H. Tate, Charles C. Tate & John B.S.B. Tate devisees of his last will & testament do hereby for themselves and their heirs emancipate the said slave John and release him forever form the bonds of slavery to have, hold and enjoy his full liberty and freedom forever against their claim or right and against the claim or right of all persons whomsoever. In testimony whereof the said Thomas M. Tate, Nancy C. Tate, Leonidas H. Tate, John BSB Tate & Charles C. Tate, have hereunto set their hands and seals this 17th day of August 1830.

We, Charles Tate and Hatch D. Poston, Justices of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid, do hereby certify that Thomas M. Tate, Nancy C. Tate, Leonidas H. Tate, John B.S.B. Tate, & Charles C. Tate, parties to a certain deed bearing date the 17th day of August 1830, and hereto annexed personally appeared before us on this day at our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed, and desired us to certify their said acknowledgment to the Clerk of Washington County in order that the same may be there recorded. Given under our hands and seals August 17th 1830.

The within deed of emancipation was delivered to the Clerk of Washington County on this 27th day of September 1830 and admitted to record.
