Know all men by these presents that I John H. Bumgarner of the County of Highland in the State of Ohio, and now in the County of Orange and State of Virginia, have liberated, emancipated, and set free, and by these presents doth liberate, emancipate and set free my slaves John Hall aged twenty five years, Monroe aged twenty eight years, Jane aged twenty two years, Reuben Johnson aged twenty one years, Benjamin Johnson aged sixteen years, Lucy Johnson aged fourteen years, George Johnson aged twelve years, and James Johnson aged six years. The said John, Monroe & Jane being brothers and sister, and Reuben, Benjamin, Lucy, George and James being brothers and sisters, all of whom were slaves the property of my late father George Bumgarner to whom I was the only child and sole heir and distribute, the said slaves having lived & been held in slavery in the State of Virginia. In testimony whereof I have hereunto placed my hand and seal this twelfth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven.
