Know all men by these presents that I Charles P. Howard of the County of Orange and State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated & set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a young negro man slave named Franklin, sometimes called Franklin Jennings, a bright mulatto, and about twenty years of age. And I hereby declare the said Franklin to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights & privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him. In testimony whereof, I hereto put my hand and seal this sixteenth day of January eighteen hundred and fifty six.

This deed of emancipation was this day acknowledged before me in the office aforesaid by Charles P. Howard a party thereto, and admitted to record.
