Know all men by these presents I William C. Moore Senior of the County of Orange and State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man named Tom, sometimes called Thomas Smith, & I hereby declare him the said Thomas Smith to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him. He the said Thomas Smith hereby emancipated is a man of dark complexion and of ordinary stature, and supposed to be upwards of sixty years of age. In testimony whereof I the said William C. Moore Sen’r have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 16th day of October eighteen hundred and forty six.

At a monthly court held for the County of Orange at the courthouse on Monday the 26th of October 1846. This deed of emancipation from William C. Moore Sen’r to his slave tom, sometimes called Thomas Smith was this day proved in open court by the oaths Joseph D. Reynolds and James B. Moore, witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
