Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Newman of the County of Orange in the State of Virginia in consideration of the faithful services and correct deportment of my negro man slave named Titus about thirty years of age, and of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid at or before the ensealing and delivery hereof. Do by these presents emancipate and set free my said slave Titus, hereby declaring that henceforth Titus shall be as free to all intents and purposes, and shall enjoy as full freedom as if he had been born free. In testimony whereof I the said Thomas Newman hereto put my hand and affix my seal this 26th day of August 1844.

At a quarterly court held for the County of Orange at the courthouse on Monday the 26th day of August 1844. This deed of emancipation from Thomas Newman to his negro man slave named Titus was this day proved in open court by the oath of William Douglass, Alfred Thomson, and James B. Newman, the witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded.
