Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I William P. Eliason of the County of Madison, in the State of Virginia, in consideration of the faithful services and correct deportment of my negro woman slave named Polly, a dark mulatto about fifty years of age and of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid at or before the executing and delivery hereof. Hereby declaring that henceforth she shall be as free to all intents and purposes and shall enjoy as full freedom as if she’d been born free. In testimony whereof I the said William P. Eliason hereto put my hand and affix my seal at Orange courthouse this 19th day of July one thousand eight hundred & forty three.
