Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I Joseph Edward of the county of Orange in the State of Virginia in consideration of the faithful services and correct deportment of my negro man slave named James Walker a bright mulatto about twenty three years of age, five feet eight inches high, and of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid at or before the ensealing and delivery thereof. Do by these presents emancipate and set free my said slave James Walker hereby declaring that henceforth he shall be as free to all intents and purposes and shall enjoy as full freedom as if he had been born free. In testimony whereof I, the said Joseph Edward, hereto put my hand and affix my seal at Orange courthouse this 18th day of July one thousand eight hundred and forty three.
