Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Joseph Edwards of the county of Orange in the State of Virginia in consideration of the faithful services and correct deportment of my negro slave named Francis alias Franky, a black woman about forty seven years of age, and of the sum of one dollars to me in hand paid at or before the ensealing and delivery hereof, do by these presents emancipate and set free my said slave Francis alias Franky, hereby declaring that henceforth she shall be as free to all intents and purposes and shall enjoy as full freedom as if she had been born free. In testimony whereof I the said Joseph Edwards hereto put my hand and affix my seal at Orange courthouse this 18th day of July one thousand eight hundred and forty three.
