Text of Freedom Document

Whereas by the last Will and Testament of the late Hon. David Campbell
of Abingdon Virginia, made in the 4th day of February 1857, and a Codicil made thereto on the 7th of September 1857, provision is made for the emancipation of his servant man David, aged Thirty three years, of Coper[sic] complexion, if it could be done by the laws of the state of Virginia, when the death of his widow Mary H Campbell should occur, which last event happened on the 6th day of October 1859_ Now by virtue of the authority given to me by said Will I hereby set free and Emancipate the said slave David Byrd, provided he complies with the laws of the state of Virginia, and removes beyond the limits of the same.

Given under my hand and seal this 15th day of November 1859.

At a court continued and held for Washington County the 30th day of
November 1859.
This Deed of Emancipation from William B. Campbell as
Executor of David Campbell dec’d to David Boyd, was proved in court
by the oaths of Joseph K. Gibson and Joseph L. Baltyell[?] the subscribing
witnesses thereto, to be the act and deed of said William B. Campbell
executor as aforesaid and ordered to be recorded.
