Text of Freedom Document
I Thomas Kaywood of the county of Washington
and State of Virginia do hereby make this my last Will
and Testament in manner and form following, that is
to say.
1st I give to my wife Rebecca Kaywood the farm on which
I now live together with all its appurtenances, my farming
tools, kitchen and household furniture, also all my horses,
cattle hogs and sheep of every description, also all my grain
that may be left on the farm or due me, also my negro
girl Clary[?] and my negro boy James.
2nd My boy Henry I desire to be free at my death – my negro
woman Rhody is left to her own choice to be free or remain
as one of the family. And it is my intention
that my wife Rebecca shall pay all my just debts out of the
portion of my estate holding any balance that may
remain to be collected after my death. And lastly I do
hereby constitute and appoint Rebecca Kaywood my
wife Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby
revoking all other or former Wills or Testaments by me heretofore made.
In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this
12th day of July 1842

At a court held for Washington County the 27th day
of April 1846
The last Will and Testament of Thomas
Kaywood deceased was exhibited in court and
proved by the oaths of Samuel Dunn and Solon Buchanan
two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to
be recorded. And on the motion of Rebecca Kaywood
the executrix therein named who took the oaths
of an executrix prescribed by law and entered into
and acknowledged her bond in the sum of Two
thousand dollars with Solon Buchanan and
George W. Cole as her securities conditioned as the
law directs. A certificate is therefore granted her
for obtaining letters testamentary on the estate of
the said Thomas Kaywood deceased in due form
