For and in consideration of services well performed & of good
will and esteem for my slave Tom a large black man about
six feet high, fifty years old, I do hereby emancipate & set free
forever said Tom hoping and believing he will do well —
Witness my hand & seal this 20th of August 1828.

At a court held for Washington county the 21st day of
October 1828.
This deed of emancipation from Francis Smith to
his slave Tom was acknowledged in court by the said
Smith to be his act & deed & ordered to be recorded.
