Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I Patrick Henry of the County of Middlesex and State of Virginia have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free the following slaves to wit: my wife Louisa and her child William. Louisa was sold and delivered to be by Hiram Walker and Robert C. Garland administrators of Robert Barrick dec’d on the 4th day of December 1841. And I hereby declare them the said Louisa and William to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of free persons with which it is in my power to vest them, they the said Louisa and William hereby emancipated are of light complexion. Louisa is about five feet two or three inches high and is about thirty years old, and William is about thirteen months old. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 17th day of August 1843.
