Text of Freedom Document
I John Quarles of the county of Middlesex being in perfect sense and memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all others heretofore made.
Imprimis. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be honestly paid & that my body be buried in a plain but decent manner at the discretion of my executors.
Item After my debts and legacies are satisfied, I give to my dear wife Elizabeth Stonard Quarles all my household & kitchen furniture, my books, provisions & liquors, stock of horses & cattle, sheep and hogs, carriages, plantation utensils, the crops that may be on hand, or growing, and all debts due to me to her my said wife and to her heirs forever in fee simple.
Item It is my will & desire that my executors do emancipate my servant boy called Anderson Dangerfield soon as he arrives to the age of twenty one years, provided he can at that time be permitted to enjoy his liberty within this, or any other of the United States. For the faithful services of my old servant Bob, it is my desire that my executors treat him with lenity during his life.
Item In case any of my slaves behave undutifully to their mistress or conduct themselves improperly, it is my will that my executors may if they think proper, dispose of such slave or slaves as shall thus misbehave, and vest the proceeds of the sale in bank stock the dividend upon which to be drawn by my wife during her life & at her decease the stock to vest in my brother Robert in lieu of the slaves so disposed of.
Item All the rest and residue of my estate that I may die possessed of, or be entitled to, I lend to my wife Elizabeth S Quarles during her natural life (bother real and personal) and after her death, I devise the same to my brother Robert Quarles and his heirs forever.
Item It is my will that no appraisement of my estate be made, but that my executors return to court an inventory of my slaves only.
Lastly I constitute and appoint my wife Elizabeth and my brother Robert Quarles executrix and executor of this my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this seventeenth day of March one thousand eight hundred and thirteen.
