Know all men by these presents that I Overton Cosby of Urbanna in the County of Middlesex for divers good causes and considerations, me thereunto moving, do emancipate & set free upon and immediately after my death my negro woman Jenny, otherwise called Jane Kearn, and her two daughters Nancy Lightfoot Kearn and Cartagena Kearn, together with all the future increase of them or either of them, and it is the true intent and meaning of the said Overton Cosby, the above mentioned slaves & their increase and all and every of them shall and are to remain and continue as much the slaves of the said Overton Cosby for and during the term of his natural life as if the above deed had never been made & that immediately on the death of the said Overton Cosby and not before, that the above said slaves and their future increase & all and every of them be emancipated & set free in as full and ample a manner as if they and every of them had been born free. In testimony whereof I the said Overton Cosby have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty ninth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety four.

At a court held for Middlesex County at the courthouse in Urbanna on Monday the 27th day of October 1794. This deed of emancipation from Overton Cosby to Jane Kearn and others was acknowledged by the said Overton to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded.
