Text of Freedom Document
I Samuel Hargrave of the County of Charles City from mature deliberation and the conviction of my own mind, being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind, and being desirous of doing to others as I would be done by, and having under my care four Negroes to wit, Abraham aged about twenty eight, Edward aged about twenty, Sampson aged about eleven, Lucy aged about four, I do for myself my heirs, executors and administrators hereby emancipate and set free from slavery the above named people who are above the ages the males twenty one years, & the female eighteen years, and also the minors when they shall attain the males to the age of twenty one years, and the females to the age of eighteen years. Given under my hand and seal this fifteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five.

At a monthly court held for Charles City County on Thursday the fifteenth day of January 1795 the afore written deed of emancipation from Samuel Hargrave to his slaves was acknowledged by the said Hargrave and ordered to be recorded.
