Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I John Slaughter of the City of Williamsburg for divers good, meritorious and valuable considerations me thereunto moving, and for the addition and consideration of the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid by Oberia Drewry (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) have manumitted, liberated, emancipated, set free and from all kinds and degrees of servitude forever discharged, and by these presents, do manumit, liberate, emancipate, set free, and from all kinds and degrees of servitude forever discharge her, the said Oberia Drewry, which said Oberia Drewry was sold and conveyed to me by Samuel Drewry deceased in his lifetime, and had been personally conveyed to said Samuel Drewry by Benjamin Allen, her former owner. And I do hereby warrant and defend the claim and title of said Oberia Drewry to her freedom against the claims and demands of myself and of all persons whatsoever, claiming by, through, and under me. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 16th day of November 1857.

I John H. Barlow, a Justice of the Peace for the city aforesaid in the State of Virginia, do certify that John Slaughter, whose name is signed to the writing hereto annexed bearing date in the 16th day of November 1857 has acknowledged the same before me in my corporation aforesaid. Given under my hand this 16th day of November 1857.

In York County Court the 16th of November 1857. This deed was produced and with the certificate thereon endorsed, ordered to be recorded.
