Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Griffin of the town and county of York in the State of Virginia for and in consideration of the faithful services and also for the further consideration of three hundred dollars to me in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have this day emancipated and set free from bondage my mulatto female slave named Peggy, sometimes called “Peggy Moss”, who was purchased by me some years past from Thomas Minson of York County as appears by his bill of sale to me; which said female called “Peggy” I hereby declare and make known to be from this date a free person of color, hereby relinquishing all right, title, interest on estate I had on her, the said Peggy – hereby [intelligible] and defending her right to freedom from the claim or claims of any person or persons under me or connected with me, and of all and every other person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourth day of June in the year eighteen hundred and thirty three.
