Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I George. W. Simple of the County of Elizabeth City Va. in consideration of one thousand & five dollars to me in hand paid by Junius Stewart of said county a free person of color and for divers and other good causes and considerations me moving, do by these presents manumit, emancipate and set free from slavery a negro woman slave named Catherine Combs a bright mulatto woman aged about 34 years, and her two children Dianna aged about 5 yrs and Albert aged about 3 yrs which said slaves were purchased by me from William R. Willis commissioner at a sale by him under decree of the Circuit Court for the County of Elizabeth City in [?chy?] suit of Jett Horay in Colton &c.
