Know all men by these presents that I John Simpson of Elizabeth City County from motives of benevolence have manumitted and set free from slavery my negro man named Hercules aged sixty years. And I do hereby give, grant and release unto the said Hercules all my right, title and claim of, in and to his person, labor & services as aforesaid, and of, in and to all the estate & property which he may hereafter acquire or obtain.
In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand & seal this ninth day of June in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty five.

I James B. Hope a Not. Pub. For the county aforesaid in the State of Virginia do certify that John Simpson whose name is signed to the writing above bearing on the 9th day of June 1855 has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid.
