Know all men by these presents that I Nancy Tarrant of Hampton County of Elizabeth City, have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man slave named James Bailey who was sold and delivered to me by George Hope on the [blank] day of [blank] said County. And I hereby declare the said James Bailey to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him. He the said James Bailey hereby emancipated is a man of yellow complexion about five feet 8 ½ inches and will be fifty five years of age on the 8th day of April next.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of January 1839.
