Know all men by these presents that I James Maylor Cooper of the County and parish of Elizabeth City for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings to me in hand paid by negro Jack as well for past services of him the said Jack, do emancipate and set him free forever. In witness whereof I set my hand and affix my seal this 23rd day of March 1797.
