Know all men by these presents that I William Edwards of Surry County for and in consideration of the many and faithful services rendered by Betty, one of my female slaves, and in order to reward her, have and by these presents do emancipate, acquit and discharge her from all service and control, hereby intending to transmit to her, her liberty and freedom. And I understand for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators that from and after the day of this instrument that no act of control, ownership, or interference shall be exercised over the said negro woman Betty, but that she shall be and remain forever free and discharged from her former condition of slavery. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 26 day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and four.

At a court continued and held for Surry County April 25th 1804. The within written deed of emancipation from William Edwards to negro Betty was acknowledged by the said William Edwards to be his act and deed and by the court ordered to be recorded.
