Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I William Edwards of Surry County for and in consideration of the many and faithful services rendered by Betty, one of my female slaves, and in order to reward her, have and by these presents do emancipate, acquit and discharge her from all service and control, hereby intending to transmit to her, her liberty and freedom. And I understand for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators that from and after the day of this instrument that no act of control, ownership, or interference shall be exercised over the said negro woman Betty, but that she shall be and remain forever free and discharged from her former condition of slavery. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 26 day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and four.
Sealed, signed, and delivered in presence of William Edwards (seal)
