Text of Freedom Document
This deed made the 5th day of October 1861 between William C. Pratt acting Executor & residuary legatee of Thomas Pratt dec’d of the one part and Jacob Beverley formerly the slave of the said Thomas Pratt witnesseth that in pursuance of the verbal request of the said Thomas Pratt dec’d made just before his death the said William C. Pratt Executor and legatee as aforesaid, hath manumitted, liberated and forever set free, and by these presents doth manumit, liberate and forever set free from slavery the said Jacob Beverley a dark mulatto aged about twenty six years. In witness whereof the said William C. Pratt hath hereunto set his hand & seal this day and year above written.

State of Virginia Corporation of Freds’burg to wit:
I Samuel S. Harrison a notary public for the corporation aforesaid do certify that William C. Pratt this day personally appeared before me in the Corporation aforesaid and acknowledged the foregoing writing bearing date the 5th day of October and signed by him to be his act and deed. Given under my hand this 5th day of October 1861.

This deed of manumission from William C. Pratt to Jacob Beverley with the certificate of the acknowledgment thereof by the said William C. Pratt endorsed was this day received in the office and admitted to record.
