Know all men by these presents that I Polly Pearce of the County of Spotsylvania and State of Virginia – divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving have liberated, manumitted and set free and by these presents do liberate, manumit, and set free Gilbert Baylor a mulatto man about fifty years of age who was formerly owned by Andrew Mithcell under a deed of trust from whom he was sold and purchased by Robert Crutchfield of whom I purchased him. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this the sixth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three.

This deed from Polly Pearce to Gilbert Baylor was this day proved by the oath of John L. Marye one of the witnesses thereto and it appearing that R.L. Stevenson the other attending witness has departed this life, Oscar M. Crutchfield and Robert C. Dabney were sworn and severally deposed that they were well acquainted with the handwriting of the deceased & that they verily believed that the name of the said deceased as the attesting witness to this deed was written wholly by the said R.L. Stevenson dec’d and thereupon the said deed is ordered to be recorded.
