Know all men by these presents that I Thomas C. Massey of the borough and County of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, formerly of Spotsylvania County and State of Virginia, do hereby emancipate and set free a certain female slave named Jane, and commonly called Jinney, owned by me; she being of sound mind and memory and good moral character and about forty years of age living in the County of Spotsylvania and State of Virginia with my mother Lucy Stewart, said Jane is to be free forever after this date. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th day of August one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight.

Personally appeared before me the undersigned one of the Justices of the Peace in and for the said county above named Thomas C. Massey and acknowledged the above instrument of writing to be his act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned. Given under my hand and seal the sixth day of August A.D. 1838.

I John Urie Prothonotary of the Court of Commons Pleas in & for said county, do hereby certify that James Orr Esq. before whom the foregoing proceedings were held was at the time and now is an acting Justice of the Peace in & for said county, duly commissioned and to all his acts full faith is and right to be given.
In testimony I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said office at Washington this 6th day of August A.D. 1838.

This letter of emancipation from Thomas C. Massey to Jane a negro slave with the certificate of the acknowledgement and authorization annexed was this day received in the office and admitted to record.
