Know all men by these presents that I Daniel Grinnan of the Town of Fredericksburg & State of Virginia do by these presents hereby liberate from the bondage of slavery a mulatto man called or named Dade Massey about thirty six years old, about five feet seven inches high & of considerable impediment of speech. But upon this express understanding & conditions that the said Dade Massey shall forthwith no more without the limits of the aforesaid State of Virginia & shall so continue out of the said State & shall dwell & remove in the State wherein his present wife, a black woman named Grace shall be settled, but should the said Dade Massey evade or not comply with the said conditions he shall be & remain my slave. Witness my hand & seal this 29th day of November 1828.

This deed of emancipation from Daniel Grinnan to Dade Massey was proved by the oaths of John L. Marye and Thomas H. Botts two of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded.
