I Bernard Gatewood of the County of Spotsylvania & State of Virginia do hereby after my death set my negro man Tom free, that is to say I give unto him twenty five acres of land to be laid off at the north corner of my plantation about the turnpike for him to have & to hold during his natural life, and also I appoint Jno L. Gatewood to stand as master for said Tom provided anything should occur as to depreciations &c.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 7th day of August 1823.

This letter of emancipation from Bernard Gatewood to negro man Tom was proved by the oaths of Robert Carter and Mary Ann Carter witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
