Text of Freedom Document
In the name of my Lord so be it, I Edmund Fox of the County of Spotsylvania and State of Virginia being in health and perfect sense and memory but calling to mind the uncertainty of this short life do make my last will and testament in the following manner. First, I commit my body to the earth to be buried at the discretion of my friends as to my soul that immortal part I resign it to the Lord with a free assurance that he will do right, as to the property that the Lord has blest with I give to my sister Polly Fox to be managed or disposed of in any manner that she may deem most expedient and profitable for the benefit of my infant daughter Philadelphia Fox all and every kind of property that I possess both real and personal I give and bequeath in the above mentioned manner except a boy called Henry which boy Henry I desire may be bound out at the discretion of my said sister Polly Fox until he arrives to the age of twenty one years and then I desire that he may be emancipated and possess his freedom unmolested if it should so happen that my said daughter Philadelphia Fox should die without lawful issue then I desire that all the property that I have bequeathed to her in this will may be divided among the children of my beloved sister Barbary J Wallace to them and their heirs forever. Now I declare this to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of December 1819.
