Be it known that I Charles Thornton of the County of Spotsylvania having the feet simple estate in & to a certain female negro by name Maria now in my possession & for certain good causes me thereunto moving, to set free & emancipate the said girl Moriah, this is therefore to make known and certify that I hereby set free & emancipate the said [?Maria?] from me and all and my person or persons claiming under me. As witness my hand and seal this twenty ninth day of August 1799.
