This is to certify that my desire is for my negro woman Betty to be free after living with my niece [?Henry?] Newton as long as she shall think proper, and to serve no person only then she may choose.

This letter of emancipation from James Newton dec’d to his slave Betty was produced to the court & the witnesses thereto having disposed that he wrote the same and subscribed the name thereto & at the request of the said James Newton, it is admitted to record.
