Know all men by these presents that I Benjamin Day of Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania County for and in consideration of the past good conduct of Nanny, my negro woman slave, do by these presents liberate, emancipate, and set free, and do hereby discharge her the said Nanny from all manner of slavery and servitude and declare her to be in as perfect a state of freedom and entitled to all the privileges and advantages arising therefrom as she can legally enjoy. In testimony whereof I the said Benjamin Day have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this fifth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven.

We the subscribers, inhabitants of Williamsburg, do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Nanny, a negro woman slave, belonging to Benjamin Day of Fredsburg [sic], that she is an industrious, health woman whose age appears to be between forty and fifty years, and from a desire in her master to liberate her, for her past good conduct, we have at his request given this certificate to the Court of Spotsylvania County, where the law requires the deed shall be executed. Given under our hands at Williamsburg this sixth of September 1797.

This deed of emancipation from Benjamin Day to his slave Nanny was proved by the oaths of the two witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
