Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Charles Thornton for and in consideration of the sum of sixty pounds current money of Virginia to me in hand paid by Larkin Stanard for and in behalf of John Wheeler do by these presents emancipate and set free a negro woman slave named Priscilla being the same which I purchased of Henry Fitzhugh who purchased her of Benjamin Hyde who purchased her of John F. Mercer who brought the said slave from the state of Maryland. And I do hereby absolve & discharge the said woman slave from all rights or services which I may ever heretofore have been entitled to from her or any her future increase or issue. In witness whereof I have set my hand and affixed my seal this fourth day of August 1795.
