In the name of God Amen. I Edwin Lanier of the County of Sussex Virg’a being of sound mind and memories do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner from following to wit.
Imprimis. I give and bequeath to Lewis Lanier the tract of land whereon I now live lying in Sussex County containing four hundred & six acres it being the tract that my left to me at disposal. I give the same to him and his heirs forever.
Item I also give Lewis Lanier the following negroes namely Zack, Charlotte and Jim, I give to him & his heirs forever.
Item I lend to my wife Lacy Lanier during life or widowhood my tract of land lying in Prince George County known by the name of Twins tract. Also I lend my wife for the term of life the following negroes Jerome, Bithy, Judy, Anthony, Liza. I also lend her one bed and furniture, a secretary, one buffet, six chairs, one gig & harness, one horse, two cows, thirty barrels of corn, eight hundred lb of pork, and thirty dollars [illegible] as much fodder as will supply her. My will is that my negro woman Jane shall be emancipated. I therefore do free her, liberate her from all bondage and slavery during her life. I also give Jane one horse and cart and all the household furniture in the house she lives in at my plantation in Prince George County and one barrel of corn and one hundred lbs of pork. I also give by woman Jane two hundred and fifty dollars which money is to be drawn from my estate. My will is that Jane shall remain in the house she now lives in nine months without interruption, and at the expiration of nine months my will is that she shall receive the money I give her and move to the Ohio or any free state she wishes to go to where the law will permit her to remain.
Item My will and desire is that a sufficiency of the balance of my estate which I have not disposed of should be so to pay off all my just debts and to satisfy all claims agreeable to the repudiations of my will.
Item I give to my daughter Amanda Woodard formerly Amanda Lanier all the remainder part of my estate not disposed of after my just debts be paid, I give to her and her heirs forever. And at the death of my wife Lucy Lanier I give to my daughter Amanda Woodard my Prince George plantation. I also give her all the property I loaned my wife at her death. I give the same to Amanda Woodard to her and her heirs forever.
Lastly I do nominate my friend and appoint Seth Heath of Petersburg and William Hawthorn of Petersburg my whole and sole executors in this my estate. My will is that my friend Seth Heath and W. Hawthorn will keep the amount of two hundred and fifty dollars in their hand for my woman Jane and let her have fifty dollars of the money immediately if she calls for it, and the balance when she needs it. My will is that my Seth Heath and William shall have one hundred dollars each for their attention to my will and settling of my estate agreeable to my will. My will is that neither of my executors shall be bound to give security for their faithful performance of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 16th day of October eighteen hundred and twenty seven.

At a court held for Sussex County the 7th day of August 1828. The last will and testament of Edwin Lanier dec’d was presented into court and proved by the oaths of Robert B. Aldrige and Jeremiah Aldridge the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. Whereupon Seth Heath and William Hawthorn the Executors therein named renounced in writing under their hands their right of qualification.
