Text of Freedom Document
I Mourning Briggs of Sussex County in Virginia being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that I am desirous of doing to others as I would desire to be done by in the like situation and having under my care one negro man Luke aged twenty two years, I hereby emancipate and set free the above named slave and that he enjoy his freedom in as full and ample manner as freeborn person might or could do and I do for myself, my heirs, Executors, Administrators relinquish all my right, title, claim or demand whatsoever either to his person or any estate he may hereafter acquire. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this seventh day of the second month in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one.

At a court held for Sussex County the 2nd day of June 1791. This deed of emancipation was proved to be the act and deed of Mourning Briggs by the affirmations of Samson Stanton and Richard Wren (Quakers) two of the witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded.
