Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I Joel Pennybacker of the County of Shenandoah in the State of Virginia for and in consideration of one dollar current money of the United States to him in hand paid by Si a mulatto man, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged & for divers causes & considerations me thereunto moving, do hereby discharge, emancipate & set free the said Si as fully as I can do according to the Act of Assembly of Virginia. The said Si not to be subject to the claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever nor the control or under the management of any one, the object of this deed being to free him from all servitude to me & my heirs & assigus forever, or any other person claiming from, by, through or under me. As witness my hand & seal this 8th day of February 1836.

At a court held for the County of Shenandoah on Monday the 8th day of February 1836. This deed of emancipation was acknowledged in open court & ordered to be recorded.
