Know all men by these presents that I Michael Barr of the County of Shenandoah & State of Virginia from motives of benevolence & humanity & for the further consideration of two hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Ben, a certain negro slave purchased of John Dirting, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have manumitted, emancipated & set free & hereby do manumit, emancipate & set free my negro slave Ben. And I do hereby entirely & fully discharge him from the performance of any contract entered into during servitude & design that he is to enjoy full and entire freedom. And to this end I do hereby give, grant, and release unto the said Ben all my right, title & claim of, in & to his person, labor & service & of, in & to the estate & property which he now has acquired or which he may hereafter acquire & obtain. And for myself, my Exors, &c will warrant & defend forever by these presents. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 31st day of December 1833.

At a court held for the County of Shenandoah on Monday the 11 day of July 1836. This deed of emancipation was acknowledged and ordered to be recorded.
