Know all men by these presents that I Barnett Stoudemoyer of the County of Shenandoah and State of Virginia for divers good causes and considerations thereunto moving me have manumitted, emancipated and set free a negro man slave named John Buckner and commonly called Jack who was sold and delivered to me in the year 1818 by John B. Sanford of the County and State aforesaid. And I hereby declare him the said John Buckner to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my person to vest him. He the said John Buckner hereby emancipated is a man of dark complexion about five feet ten inches high and thirty eight years old. In testimony whereof I the said Barnett Stoudemoyer have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty seventh day of October 1828.

The undersigned do hereby certify that they have been well acquainted with and strict observers of the conduct of John Buckner who was lately manumitted by Barnett Stoudemoyer for the last ten years, and can attest that they ever believe him to be a good and honest servant and an humble peaceable and well disposed man in every respect. Given under our hands this 27th day of October 1828.

We Peter May & Gab’l Jordan Justices of the Peace in the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Barnet Stoudemoyer party to a certain deed of manumission bearing date on the 27th day of October 1828 and hereto annexed personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the County Court of Shenandoah in order that the said act of manumission may be more fully acted upon according to the laws of this Commonwealth. Given under our hands and seals this 3rd day of Nov 1828.
