Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Richardson of the County of Shenandoah for divers good causes & considerations hath liberated, emancipated & set free & by these presents doth liberate, emancipate & set free a certain negro man named Samuel Gaines about twenty one years of age, as fully & completely as I may or can do by virtue of the act of General Assembly concerning the emancipation of slaves.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of December 1804.

At a court held for the County of Shenandoah on the 10th day of December 1804. This deed of emancipation from Samuel Richardson to negro Samuel Gaines was acknowledged by the said Samuel Richardson & ordered to be recorded. It is ordered that it be certified that the said Samuel Gaines is over the age of twenty one & under forty five years of age & of sound mind & body.
