Text of Freedom Document
Whereas I am entitled under the will of my deceased father to a negro man slave named Bob now in the possession of William Steinbergan of Shenandoah County and whereas the said slave hath been a good, upright and faithful servant, and by his uniform conduct and demeanor merited the encouragement of [illegible] man who might have had, or may hereafter have a control over the said Bob, and whereas nothing appears to me to be so subservient to the promotion of our interest and so well calculated to produce utility to society as liberty. Now know all men by these presents that I the said Thomas Botts for and in consideration of the premium aforesaid, as well as for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings pd to me by the said Bob, doth for me, my heirs, executors and administrators, liberate, manumit and forever quit claim to the said slave, from and after the expiration of six years to commence from the first day of January next, and provided the said Bob continues to conduct himself as a good and faithful slave, ought to do in the intermediate time, to wit between now and the first day of January eighteen hundred and seven, and holds himself under my control and discretion for the said term of six years to commence and expire as aforesaid, then and in that case, I will warrant and defend to him his freedom and emancipation, forever, free of and from the claim of me, my heirs, executors and administrators, and all and every other person, whatsoever, agreeable to the Act of Assembly authorizing masters and owners of slaves to emancipate them. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty second day of August eighteen hundred.
