Text of Freedom Document

I Liney Littleton of Clarke County State of Virginia do make this my last will and testament.
Article first. I will & direct that my servant woman Farinda shall be at once emancipated and set free, and second I will to the said servant woman Farinda during her natural life the houses including twenty acres of land east of and bordering on the road leading north to the Snickers Gap Pike, the said house now occupied by my son William, the said land to be land off as directed by my Executors.
And third, I will and direct that my servants Armstead, John, Joseph, Mary, Martha, Catherine, and Thomas Henry shall be held and hired out by my Executor until a sufficient amount of money has accrued therefrom to pay first all my just debts, secondly to pay to each of my sons Benjamin Franklin & William or their heirs eight hundred dollars & thirdly a sufficient sum to pay the expenses of the removal of said slaves and their increase to a free state. I furthermore authorize and direct my executors to remove my said slaves above named to a free state and emancipate them and pay over to them prorated any money arising from the hire of said slaves remaining in their hands.
And fourth, I will and bequeath to my sons Benjamin Franklin and William during their natural lives and after their several deaths to their children all of my real estate (excepting the life estate on the house & lot above mentioned as left to my servant woman Farinda) viz one half to each son or their children.
Article fifth, I will to my son William my best bed with the bedding belonging thereto.
Article sixth, I will to the children of my son William two cows, also to my children of my son Benjamin Franklin two cows.
And seventh, I will to my servant Farinda the bed chest, cupboard, and all other articles claimed by and in her immediate possession. I furthermore will and direct that all other personal property not named shall be equally divided between my sons above named. I hereby constitute and appoint my friends M.C. Kline and Meshach Sillebett executors of this my last will and testament. Given under my hand and seal this the 21st day of January 1857.

At a court held for the County aforesaid at its February term 1857. The last will and testament of Liney Littleton was produced in court and proved by the oaths of G.E. Plaster and A.M. Chamblin the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
