Deed of Emancipation
This deed of emancipation made the 5th day of June 1855. Witnesseth that I Joseph A. Vasse of the County of Clarke and State of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Mrs. Maria Wood the receipt of both which sum is hereby acknowledged, do hereby emancipate and set free my negro boy Jacob Johnson aged eleven years on the 25th day of December 1854 upon condition nevertheless that I am to retain his services until the 25th day of December 1864 and no longer, at which term he will have arrived at the age of twenty one years, and upon the further consideration and obligations on my part to pay to said Jacob Johnston on the said 25th day of December 1864 the sum of twenty five dollars and to execute any other or further papers which may be necessary to secure to said Jacob his freedom at that time.

I James R. Riley a Justice of the Peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do certify that Joseph A. Vasse whose name is signed to the writing above bearing date the 5th day of June 1855, acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid.

On the 24th day of October 1855 This deed of emancipation from Joseph A. Vasse to Jacob Johnson was produced with certificate of acknowledgement and admitted to record.
