P. Burwell to Neg. Lewis Deed of Emancipation
This deed of emancipation made and executed the first day of December 1838 by Philip Burwell of the County of Clarke and Commonwealth of Virginia in his own right and as executor of the last will and testament of Nathaniel Burwell dec’d late of Carter Hall then Frederick now Clarke County Virginia. Witnesseth that whereas the said Nathaniel Burwell dec’d by an instrument under his hand and seal executed shortly before his decease request his son the said Philip Burwell to purchase a certain slave named Lewis or Lewis Hall then in the possession of Mrs. Mary Page widow of Mann Page dec’d to be paid for out of the said Nathaniel Burwell’s estate, and further requested that the said Philip Burwell should emancipate and set free the said boy Lewis when purchased. And whereas the said Philip Burwell hat in compliance with said request purchased the said slave Lewis of Josiah Tisball Esq. to whom he belonged in right of his wife after the death of Mrs. Page. And whereas the said Philip Burwell in further compliance with said request wishes and intent & by this instrument to emancipate said boy. Now therefore in consideration of the premises and of one cent acknowledged to have been received of the said Lewis Hall, a mulatto about 5 feet eight inches in height and about twenty five years of age. In testimony whereof the said Philip Burwell hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal this day and year first above written.

Clarke County Set
At a court held for the county aforesaid on Monday the 24th day of December 1838. This deed of emancipation from Philip Burwell to a slave named Lewis Hall and containing the register of the Philip Burwell to a slave named Lewis Hall and containing the register of the said Lewis was acknowledged in court by the said Philip Burwell and ordered to be recorded and it is further ordered that the register of the said Lewis Hall be certified by the Clerk of this court.
