This deed of emancipation made this 5th day of July in the year of 1862 between Gibson W. Roy of the County of Warren and State of Virginia of the first part, and Harry Roy a man of color and servant belonging to the aforesaid Gibson W. Roy of the same county and state of the second part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of eleven hundred and fifty dollars in hand paid to the said G.W. Roy, by the said Harry Roy, the receipt of which is acknowledged, the said G.W. Roy doth emancipate, liberate, set free and discharge from servitude forever all claim or claims, right or rights, in or to the said H. Roy and by this deed declares the said H. Roy to be free within the meaning and intention of the law made & provided for the liberation or emancipation of slaves; and the said G.W. Roy will warrant and defend the claim of himself & all other persons against claiming the said Harry Roy now & forever. As witness the following signature this day & date first above written.

I Thomas W. Ashby Clerk of the County Court of Warren County in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Gibson W. Roy whose name is signed to the above writing bearing date 5th day of July 1862 acknowledged the same before me in the Clerk’s Office of the said county, and it is therefore admitted to record in the said office this 5th day of July 1862.
