Text of Freedom Document

This deed of emancipation made this 24th day of March in the year of 1862 between Charles H. Green of the County of Warren and State of Virginia in the first part and Hamilton Thomas a man of color and servant belonging to the aforesaid C.H. Green of the same county & state of the second part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand dollars in hand paid to the said Charles H. Green by the said Hamilton Thomas, the receipt of which is acknowledged, the said Charles H. Green doth emancipate, liberate, set free and discharge from servitude forever all claim or claims, right or rights in or to the said Hamilton Thomas, and by this deed declares the said Hamilton Thomas to be free within the meaning and intentions of the law made and provided for the emancipation of slaves; and the said Charles H. Green will warrant and defend the claim of himself and all others against the claims of the said Hamilton Thomas now and forever.
As witness the following signature & seal this day and date first above written.

I Thomas W. Ashby Clerk of the County Court of Warren, in the State of Virginia, do certify that Charles H. Green whose name is signed to the above writing bearing date 24th day of March 1862 acknowledged the same before me in the clerk’s office of said County, and it is therefore admitted to record in the said office this 24th day of March 1862, as witness my hand.
