Know all men by these presents that I James R. Ash of Warren County & State of Virginia do hereby emancipate and set free from slavery my female slave calling herself and known as Ann Smith, aged twenty one years, a copper colored negro, not over the middle size, and also her two children [illegible] the one named Thomas and the other Arthur, aged the one two years, the other less than one year; hereby forever releasing them from all bondage to me as my slaves and giving them their perfect freedom according to the laws of Virginia in such cases made and provided. Witness my hand and seal this 19th day of July 1855.

I Tho. B. Massie a Justice of the Peace in & for the County & State aforesaid do certify that James R. Ash whose name is signed to the writing above bearing date the 19th day of July 1855, has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid. Given under my hand this 19th day of July 1855.

Virginia Warren County to wit:
The foregoing deed of emancipation from James R. Ash to Ann Smith and her two children Thomas and Arthur was received in the Clerk’s Office of Warren County Court with certificate of acknowledgement thereto attached, and admitted to record on the 19th day of July 1855.
