I Henry Self of the County of Warren and State of Virginia being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do hereby publish and declare the following as my last will and testament revoking and annulling all former wills and codicils by me made.
First I do hereby appoint my friend Mordecai Cloud as executor of this my will and request him to act and to receive a reasonable compensation for his services as such.
Second It is my will that my servant boy Duskin be set free immediately at my death and I do hereby manumit and set free the said Duskin and that he be sent to the state of Ohio. And that my brother John Self (who is more particularly named hereafter) pay to my said executor the sum of three thousand dollars for the use and benefit of said Duskin and to be by him loaned out at interest and the interest to be paid to him annually, or should Duskin prefer it, the said sum of three thousand dollars to be vest in lands in the state of Ohio, Indiana or Illinois and the title secured and vest in the said Duskin and his heirs forever, but should my said brother John neglect to refuse to pay the said sum of three thousand dollars, then I direct that my said executor shall sell and dispose of my farm entreated on the Shenandoah River, near Morgan’s Ford to raise the said sum of money for the use and benefit as aforesaid.
Third my servant boy Jordan now about thirteen years old and Sandy about eleven years old, I direct shall be put to the blacksmith’s trade or such as my said executor may see proper, to serve for the term of seven years at the expiration of which term I wish them to be set free, and I do hereby manumit, and set free the said Jordan and Sandy and direct that they be sent to the state of Ohio. And my servants [?Sydnor?] now about eighteen years old and Alfred now about twenty seven years old, I direct my said executor to hire out privately to such masters as they may prefer for the turn of seven years at the expiration of which term I wish them to become free and I do hereby manumit and set free the said Sydnor and Alfred and the amount arising from their hire I direct shall be divided equally between them including Jordan and Sandy above named and also Patty and Rachel who are more particularly named hereafter.
Fourth I wish my old servant woman Patty now about fifty years old to have her choice either to be manumitted and set free together with her daughter Rachel and go to the State of Ohio with Duskin immediately after my death, or to remain with my brother John for the term of seven years at which time I direct that they manumitted and set free and set to the State of Ohio with the others and to receive their portion of the hire as above stated.
Fifth The remainder of my property real, personal and mixed I hereby give and bequeath to my brother John Self above named for his sole use and benefit forever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 11th day of November 1844.
