Know all men by these presents that I John S. Pendleton of Culpeper County Virginia, by & with the consent & joint action of my wife Lucy Ann Pendleton emancipated by her execution of this deed along with me, do hereby for good & sufficient cause, me thereunto moving, absolutely and forever manumit my slaves, named Addison Suckey, my shoemaker Jackson Dangerfield my foreman for several years [illegible last two lines on page] brother, my faithful friend & servant Gerard Banks. Upon consideration, however, the said servants hereby set free shall for five years to come give my wife & myself preference in hiring them, we paying them the current rates of hire for & during said five years; if we live so long. Witness our hands & seals this 11th day of April 1864.

State of Virginia Culpeper County to wit:
I James B Burdett a notary public in & for the county aforesaid do hereby certify that John S. Pendleton & Lucy Ann Pendleton his wife whose names are signed to the writing above bearing date April 11th 1864 have this day acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid & the said Lucy Ann being examined by me privily & apart from her said husband & having the paper aforesaid fully explained to her acknowledged the same to be her act & declared that she had willingly executed the same & did not wish to retract it. Given under my hand this 22nd day of April 1864.
