Text of Freedom Document

Whereas Thomas C. Freeman did by his deed of record in the Clerk’s Office of the County Court of Culpeper convey among other property to me a certain mulatto woman named Hannah in trust for certain purposes in said deed mentioned. And whereas one Lewis Patton a free man of color & the husband of the said woman Hannah has paid to me the sum of five hundred dollars to purchase the freedom of his said wife, and desired me to make a deed emancipating her from slavery. And the persons interested in the said deed of trust have all consented to the arrangement, of which fact I hold in the evidence in writing. Now therefore know all men by these presents that I Fayette Mauzy have set free & emancipated & by these presents I do set free and emancipate the said mulatto woman named Hannah from all obligation of service to any person or persons whatsoever for the time to come. The said Hannah is about five feet two inches & one eighth high, is about thirty years old, is a bright mulatto, and has a very small scar in the center of her forehead & a mole about the middle of her breast. Witness my hand & seal this 13th day of November 1846.
