Know all men by these presents that I James Gibson of the County of Culpeper and State of Virginia have this day emancipated and by these presents do emancipate and set free my man slave John (of yellow complexion about forty three years of age, about six feet high, he has a scar in his forehead, one on his left wrist, the last joint of his little finger on his left hand crooked, a large scar on his right shin cut with a scythe), and I do hereby for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators covenant and agree that the said John shall hereafter enjoy his freedom in as full and ample a manner as if he had been born free and given him twenty five dollars to bear his expenses out of the state. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th day of November one thousand eight hundred and forty three.
