Know all men by these presents that I William S Grinnan of the county of Culpeper and State of Viriginia for valuable consideration to me in hand paid have this day emancipated and set free, and by these presents do emancipate and set free a certain negro man slave named Peter commonly called Doctor Peter about fifty seven years of age, and I do hereby covenant and agree to and with the said Peter that myself, my heirs, Executors, or Administrators will not at any time hereafter exact any kind of service from him and that he shall enjoy his liberty in as full and ample a manner as if he had been born free. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventeenth day of June one thousand eight hundred and thirty five.
